Horticultural Excellence
One of the three criteria Shrewsbury is judged on by regional and national judges in the Heart of England in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions is the level of Horticultural Excellence on display.
Judges will consider evaluate Shrewsbury on:
Overall Impression
This takes into all relevant factors to determine how strong an impact the entry has in creating a memorable impression.
The floral designs and materials used should be appropriate for their locations.
There is an emphasis on coordination and overall quality of all the plants on display.
Maintenance of Planted Areas
The maintenance schedule should take account of biodiversity needs through the seasons; these will vary
depending upon setting and location. Examples could include avoiding hedge trimming in nesting season or leaving some grass longer at
certain times of year etc
Are the areas within the entry maintained to an appropriate standard, including cultivation, weeding, feeding, pruning, grass maintenance, tree management and maintenance?
Seasonal and Purposeful Display
Are the plants used in the planting schemes suited to their growing locations and purposes?
Is there a diverse range of plant-species to attract a variety of insects and wildlife? Is there year-round interest, where appropriate?
Plant Selection and Quality
Are the plants vibrant and grown to their full potential? Are they generally free of pests and diseases?
