About the Bloom Commitee

The Shrewsbury in Bloom Group is principally made up of volunteers from the local community and businesses. Volunteer members, council staff and councillors work closely with all its partners to ensure the town always looks its best.

The Shrewsbury in Bloom Group meets on a monthly basis throughout the year to help plan the floral displays for the following year. Income is generated from actively marketing, promoting and selling hanging baskets to local businesses in the town centre.

The work of the Shrewsbury in Bloom Group feeds into the Town Council’s Communities & Environment Committee which meets six times a year. Here, Councillors on the Committee are provided with up-to-date information on current bloom events and staff suggestions which help to shape the Town Council’s wider grounds maintenance functions.

The group’s main objective is to act as a stakeholder for new ideas and projects to enhance the town. Shrewsbury in Bloom promotes the Town of Flowers competition and encourages residents to enter the Best Residential Front Garden, Best Residential Container/Hanging Basket and Best Commercial Premises categories.

Schools are also encouraged to enter the Town of Flowers competition for their school grounds, with judges looking at the educational use of grounds and the direct contribution the children and young people have made.

This year has seen our Youth Council working with local school councils to encourage school entry into Bloom competitions.

Additionally, Shrewsbury in Bloom promotes the Allotment competition, open to all of the 800 allotment holders across the Town Council’s 11 sites. Allotment Associations judge their own sites to establish the site winner, after which the Allotments Secretaries Meeting determines the Champion of Champions.

Every year the Shrewsbury in Bloom Group holds an Open Evening at the Town Council’s Weeping Cross centre, giving the public an opportunity to see ‘behind the scenes’ of the Town Council’s operations, including its machinery and the 4000 square metre greenhouse.
Bloom continues to influence the strategic focus of the Town.

The Shrewsbury in Bloom Group actively participates in the development of the Big Town Plan Vision and Master Plan and the Movement & Public Place Strategy.
